My boss wrote me a glowing letter of recommendation. We picked this restaurant on his recommendation. [=because he recommended it] Employees are frequently hired on the recommendation of a friend in the company.
2 [count] : a suggestion about what should be done
The report made very specific recommendations for policy reform. He rejected his doctor's recommendation [=advice] that he work less and exercise more. The committee's recommendation to hire a new director has been well received.
3 [count] chiefly US : a formal letter that explains why a person is appropriate or qualified for a particular job, school, etc.
The application requires two written recommendations. [=references]
