Meaning:

on the lam
US, informal : trying to avoid being caught by the police
two escaped convicts on the lam If you take it on the lam, you try to escape. This expression is now used mainly to suggest or imitate the language of old movies about gangsters.
She stole a lot of money from her employer and took it on the lam.
